Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a precise, medical-grade treatment used to safely remove common benign skin lesions such as skin tags, age spots and other superficial imperfections like verruca's. Treatments are performed using the CryoPen device, allowing targeted application with minimal disruption to surrounding skin.

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a controlled treatment that uses extreme cold to safely remove benign skin lesions. The CryoPen device delivers a precise jet of nitrous oxide, allowing targeted treatment of the lesion while minimising impact on surrounding skin.

What Can Cryotherapy Treat?

Cryotherapy is suitable for a range of common benign lesions, including:

  • Skin tags

  • Age spots (solar lentigines)

  • Cherry angiomas

  • Seborrhoeic keratoses

  • Milia

  • Warts

  • Verruca's

All lesions are assessed prior to treatment to ensure safe and appropriate management.

Treatment Process

Treatments are quick and performed with precision.

  1. The lesion is assessed and suitability confirmed

  2. CryoPen is applied directly to the lesion

  3. The area may whiten briefly (normal response)

  4. A natural healing process follows over the coming days

Most procedures take only a few minutes.

What to Expect After Treatment

Following cryotherapy:

  • The area may appear red or slightly raised

  • A small blister or crust may form

  • The lesion typically darkens before resolving

  • Healing occurs gradually over 2–4 weeks (varies)

  • Clear aftercare guidance is always provided.

Treatment Plan

Some lesions resolve after a single session, while others may require additional treatment depending on:

  • Lesion type

  • Size and depth

  • Skin response

If further sessions are needed, this is discussed during consultation.

FAQ

Is cryotherapy painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as brief and tolerable. You may feel a short cold or stinging sensation during application.

How many treatments will I need?

Many lesions respond to a single session, though some may require follow-up treatment depending on size and lesion characteristics.

Is there any downtime?

There is no true downtime. Normal activities can usually be resumed immediately, although the treated area will go through a natural healing phase.

Will there be a mark or scar?

When lesions are suitable and aftercare guidance is followed, scarring risk is low. Skin healing varies between individuals and lesion types.

How long does healing take?

Most areas settle within 2–4 weeks. Larger or thicker lesions may take longer.

Are all lesions suitable for treatment?

No. Only lesions assessed as benign and clinically appropriate are treated. If there is any uncertainty, referral or further evaluation may be recommended.

Clinical Assessment & Safety:

All lesions are visually assessed prior to treatment. Cryotherapy is only performed when a lesion appears benign and appropriate for management within a nurse-led aesthetics clinic. Where necessary, patients may be advised to seek GP or dermatology review.
